Brief History:
Minnesota was the home and hunting ground to the mighty Ojibwa (Chippewa) and Dakotha (Sioux) long before Father Louis Hennepin explored the region in 1680. Hennepin discovered a waterfall on th
e Mississippi River and named it for his patron saint, Saint Anthony. His discoveries led to further exploration of the region by French voyageurs, fur trappers, and traders.
France ceded its claims to the regC
ion to Britain in 1763, and the territory became part of the United States after the Revolutionary War. The western part of Minnesota was included in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Although fur trappers and tr
aders established posts in the region, it was not until 1805 that American exploration began. In that year, Lt. Zebulon Pike led a expedition up the Mississippi.
He obtained from the Indians a tract of land atE
the fork of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. Ft. Anthony (later named Fort Snelling) was founded on this site in 1819. In 1822 soldiers from the fort built a sawmill and flour mill at St. Anthony Falls.
In 1823 the steamboat, the Virginia, landed at Fort Snelling and ended the area's isolation. Treaties with the Chippewa and Sioux opened the area to settlement. In 1848 the village of St. Anthony was establisheG
d across the Mississippi from Ft. Anthony.
In 1854 the first bridge to span the Mississippi River was erected just above the falls. It connected St. Anthony with the settlement on the west bank. The two commun
ities were combined in 1872 and named Minneapolis - a combination of the Dakotah Sioux word ( minne ), meaning water and the Greek word ( polis ), meaning city.
By 1875 the first horse-drawn streetcar was operI
ating in Minneapolis, and by 1878 the Northwestern Telephone Company had established a telephone system serving 53 subscribers. Although in 1878 six mills were destroyed in an explosion, new mills were built on
the ruins, and Minneapolis became the flour milling center of the world.
Railroads leading into Minneapolis made the city a hub of commerce. Today Minneapolis is an industrial, educational, and cultural centeK
r in the region.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. The largest city in Minnesota, Minneapolis is known for its clean, modern look and its beautiful lakes and parks. Across the Mississippi River it adjoins Saint
Paul, the state capital. Together they are known as the Twin Cities.
Minneapolis, the seat of Hennepin County, is located in eastern Minnesota near the mouth of the Minnesota River where navigation on the MissM
issippi River begins. The 153 parks and 22 lakes and lagoons within its limits promote the love of the outdoors. The name Minneapolis means city of lakes, a fact that is celebrated every summer in the Aquatenni
al with parades and water sports.
There is an acre of park facilities for every 80 inhabitants. Lake Minnetonka in the western suburban area is 12 miles (19 kilometers) long with 110 miles (177 kilometers) of O
shoreline. Its outlet is at Minnehaha (or Laughing Water) Creek through the Minnehaha Falls. Longfellow wrote about the falls in his poem 'Song of Hiawatha'.
The downtown area has a climate-controlled walkway
that links about 3 miles (5 kilometers) of the downtown area by second-story skyways and bridges over the streets. It includes the nearby Nicollet Mall, which was the first major downtown pedestrian mall builtQ
in the United States.
Minneapolis has a rich and varied cultural life. The area has more live theater per capita than any other North American city outside New York City, including six professional companies
and more than 36 college, community, and smaller theaters. Famous among these is the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, which shares a building with the 20th-century art museum known as the Walker Art Center. The Guthrie S
is the home of the state repertory theater. Other cultural institutions include the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Minneapolis Public Library's science museum and planetarium, the American Swedish Institute,
and the Hennepin County Historical Society Museum. Historic Fort Snelling has also been made into a museum by the Minnesota Historical Society. Free summer concerts are offered to the public each year in a banU
dshell at Lake Harriet, and the renowned Minnesota Orchestra performs throughout the year. Sports events of every kind are played in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Minneapolis is the seat of Augsburg Colleg
e, Dunwoody Industrial Institute, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and the University of Minnesota, among others. The university's Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses combined have one of the largest daW
ytime enrollments of full-time students in the United States. There are 25 private four-year colleges and eight private junior colleges in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Along with St. Paul, Minneapolis is
the commercial and industrial center of an extensive agricultural area that includes the entire upper Midwestern area of the United States. What began as a flour-milling city has now become a busy industrial cY
enter whose products and industries include farm, electrical, and transportation machinery, printing and publishing, metal and paper products, graphic arts, electronics and precision instruments, chemicals, and
apparel. Minneapolis is the headquarters of four of the world's largest milling companies. It also is the place where much of the United States' cattle and grains are processed, distributed, and sold.

olis has received the All-America City Award and many traffic safety awards. It, together with St. Paul, has often been deemed one of the most livable and high-quality urban environments in the United States.
Minneapolis has a mayor-council form of government. The mayor is elected from the city at large, and aldermen are elected from each of 13 wards. The council elects its own president and vice-president and meets]0 regularly. Population (1985 estimate), 361,021.
